Health

bikesExxonMobil funds a program to make bicycles available to local health workers in the fight against malaria.

ExxonMobil invests in programs targeted at improving healthcare, mainly in the developing world, with a particular focus on malaria. Good health is a cornerstone of poverty alleviation, societal progress and economic growth. We support programs that build health care capacity at the community level, promote research and development, as well as advocate for awareness and support. In 2009, ExxonMobil worldwide health contributions totaled more than $21.7 million, with $18.5 million benefiting communities outside of the United States.

Since the inception of ExxonMobil’s Malaria Initiative in 2000 (formerly the AfricaHealth Initiative), our approach has shifted from concern about malaria’s impact on our own operations to being a corporate leader in the fight against the disease. Over the past decade, we have spent more than $68 million to help fund malaria programs in 17 African countries, making us the largest non-pharmaceutical corporate donor to malaria initiatives. In 2009, ExxonMobil awarded $15 million to 19 organizations for 25 different projects across Africa and in Papua New Guinea.

One of our malaria projects, the United States President’s Malaria Initiative, is working with the Angolan National Malaria Control Program to cut malaria mortality and incidence in half by 2010. To date, ExxonMobil grants of $3 million have enabled USAID to distribute over 75,000 mosquito bed nets, prepare a national malaria communications strategy, provide training, and support a National Malaria Accounts Survey. It further provided sub-grants to NGOs in nine provinces to help with the training and supervision of health workers on malaria diagnosis and treatment of infected people and pregnant women.

In the United States, we focus on research related to environmental and community health, as well as on education and outreach programs focused on respiratory health, specifically pediatric asthma. In Africa and other parts of the developing world, ExxonMobil provides support to local hospitals and clinics to meet the health needs of patients. In Angola, we provided medical equipment for a child and maternal health care centre in Calucinga. We provided drugs and medical equipment to hospitals and health centers in Lagos and Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. In Sakhalin, we funded medical equipment for hospitals in Yuzhno and Yl’chi. With Dallas-based non-profit partner MediSend International, basic medical equipment was provided to health facilities in Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.
