Mobil North Sea - Environmental Management System

MNS has adopted the Exxon Mobil Corporation policies for Safety, Health and the Environment, which means that these aspects receive the highest priority.

ExxonMobil's Operational Integrity Management System (OIMS), which MNS has implemented, builds on this policy foundation. It provides a framework for managing safety, health, security, and environmental risks at MNS facilities. Lloyds Register Quality Assurance has attested that OIMS meets all requirements of the International Standards Organisation's environmental management systems standards (ISO 14001).

OIMS System 6-5 Environmental Management defines the mechanisms for describing the regulatory and internal requirements and associated processes and procedures relating to the environmental aspects of all MNS activities. An Environmental Management Manual has been developed giving guidance on the mechanisms in place for the execution of OIMS System 6-5.

Consistent with ExxonMobil's practices, formalised Environmental Business Plans are incorporated into annual business strategies. This allows for stewardship at a senior management level of all environmental improvement projects and initiatives, and provides a disciplined approach for fully evaluating the business case of environment-related decisions, regardless of regulatory status. Every step of the way, MNS follows principles of sound science and cost-benefit analysis.

Successful implementation of environmental requirements relies on employees' knowledge, skills and awareness. All employees whose actions can affect compliance with environmental requirements receive Environmental Awareness Training. In addition, personnel with responsibility for fulfilment of environmental requirements receive subject-specific training.

As a part of OIMS and environmental business planning, line managers periodically, and at least once every year, assess the extent to which objectives have been achieved by comparing objectives against monitored performance. In addition to other data, this Assessment forms the basis for updating objectives and targets and, consequently, plans and programmes.

Each significant MNS project has an approved Project Safety, Health and Environmental Plan. It outlines:

  • Responsibilities for SHE activities and management during design, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.

  • Identification of SHE studies to facilitate identification and assessment of hazards and control of risks at each stage of the project.

  • Use of established safety goals and assessment criteria, against which to measure safety-related performance.

  • Use of Change Management systems for the implementation of design changes made after initial hazard assessments have been completed.

  • Assignment of responsibility for the establishment of a system for recording and management tracking of all identified, credible, significant hazards.

  • Key elements necessary for the provision of a safe place of work and the fostering of a good onsite safety culture.

  • Identification of SHE audits and inspections.

  • The arrangements for incident investigation and reporting.

  • Emergency response arrangements.
