Foreland Shipping cuts emissions in bio marine gasoil trial

LEATHERHEAD, UK – London-based Foreland Shipping, which specialises in the transport of general military cargo for the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), recently completed the first commercial bio marine gasoil bunkering in the port of Southampton.
  • Successful trial helps cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5.7 percent
  • DFA grade meets ISO 8217: 2017 specification with FAME and complies with EN 14214.

The DFA grade from ExxonMobil Marine Fuels is a combination of a conventional maximum 0.10 percent sulphur marine gasoil with up to 7 percent waste-based fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The resulting blend meets ISO 8217:2017 specification, with FAME content complying with EN 14214.

Stephen Cooper, Foreland Shipping General Manager, said: “Our tests aboard the Anvil Point produced overall emissions savings of 5.7 percent, and because it is a drop-in fuel compatible with existing grades, we didn’t have to make any changes to our normal operating procedures.

“As a leading supplier to the MOD, we need to ensure that fuel quality is maintained at all times. The reliability of our supply arrangements is crucial to support the deployment of our vessels. That is why we decided to work with ExxonMobil Marine Fuels and their dedicated barge operator, Whitaker Tankers, who have years of expertise in bunkering operations. In fact we are already planning to receive another delivery.”

Whitaker Tankers Director, Ashley Jenkins commented: “Enhanced product handling procedures were developed in close collaboration with the ExxonMobil technical team. Our crews are experienced in best bunkering practice; the processes of segregation and continuous drip sampling are no different for biofuels.”

Nathalie Freeman ExxonMobil UK Marine Fuels Manager said: “We believe this was the first bio marine gasoil bunker delivery on the UK South Coast and is the result of close collaboration between all stakeholders. ExxonMobil is already supplying marine biofuel oil in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region and Singapore, further supporting the marine industry’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions.”

Chief of Defence Logistics and Support (CDLS), VAdm Andy Kyte, said: “We have an operational requirement to support deployed personnel across the globe, and where possible to consider the environmental impact of our activity and how we reduce emissions. Early use of a Biofuel/MGO blend demonstrates one way in which MOD is striving to meet that commitment and we are excited by the future opportunities this trial offers.”
