Leatherhead SSHE Update

2021 was a busy year for the Leatherhead SSHE committee, whose role is to create a safe work-life culture on site.  By the end of the year, Ermyn House reached a milestone 2,500 days without any lost time injuries at the site. In addition to the standard SSHE metrics, they’re trying to provide support and resources in these uncertain times.

Leatherhead SSHE Update

Comprising nine representatives of all business lines present in the Leatherhead office, the SSHE committee aims to inform colleagues about all aspects of safety, security, health & environment.  It plays an active and visible role in the promotion of safety initiatives and works to encourage and equip all personnel to take responsibility for their own personal health and ergonomics, as well as the safety and mental wellbeing of their colleagues.

At the Leatherhead site, the Health, Safety and Security Handbook has been supplemented by the Covid-19 site manual which covers the special measures and behaviours on-site during the pandemic.  Other initiatives have included seasonal flu vaccinations, ergonomic assessments and biometric screening.  

The committee also arranges for various in-house specialists to give talks and advice throughout the year, including external speakers, such as a former Surrey Police Officer & Counter Terrorism Security Adviser and the RNLI.

Ellen De Man, a Geoscientist and current SSHE chair, says the committee is focused on a number of activities this year.  “In January, we were delighted to welcome Erik Oswald, VP Strategy & Advocacy in Low Carbon Solutions to our first quarter SSHE meeting, who presented “Inside Low Carbon Solutions” to a UK-wide audience.  This will be followed by a talk on sustainability, plastic waste and advanced recycling opportunities by Xavier Milcent and Baudouin Kelecom in March.

“Our MOH manager, Dr. Sade Adenekan also arranged for training and information sessions to be delivered by the charity MIND during the Mental Health Awareness Week in May.  This fits into additional mental health initiatives taking place via internal and external initiatives, such as the ‘Culture of Health’ and Mental Health First-Aid training.”
